9th Floor - Staff Lounge

Not many people knew that there was a 9th floor in the F Street building above the 7 selling floors and the administration floor on the 8th. Above that was the uninished 9th floor which was the home of the display department, advertising, and the employee lounge where our friends could gather for lunch and just have a quiet sit-down during breaks. Even though there was a pair of dusty, unused elevator doors in the center of the floor for the main elevators (Garfinckels was the first major store in DC to have an elevator as the main customer conveyance - there was no escalator in the store), the 9th floor was accessed by the staff elevators on the White House side of the building.

If you are a former Garfinckels employee (or have information about former employees) and would like to post information to this page, please send an email to the 8th Floor and we will add you to the page.

Garfinckels Trivia

Not many people know that Julius Garfinckel was not at all fond of the color Brown. So much so, that none of his employees were allowed to wear the color in the store.

Of course, this was before the days of UPS delivery with all their brown trucks and brown-dressed delivery personnel.

The Garfinckels trucks were all Blue and White.

In respect to Mr. Garfinckel's wishes, there is no major use of the color (outside of photographs or illustrations from store advertising) at Garfinckels.com
